Simchas Yom Tov (abridged)
MBY 529:1-4 Simchas Yom Tov (abridged)

For this final lesson in Hilchos Yom Tov, we will excerpt from the sefer Yom Tov in Halacha by Rabbi Yisroel Nadoff (pp. 210-211): “Kavod (Honor), Oneg (Enjoyment) and Simcha (Joy) on Yom Tov The Sages derived from the words ‘mikra kodesh’ (a holy convocation) that just as we have the mitzvos of ‘kavod’ and ‘oneg’ on Shabbos, so too we are required to honor and enjoy the Yom Tov. The mitzvah of ‘kavod’ is manifested by washing in warm water on Erev Yom Tov and wearing special clothes on Yom Tov as we do on Shabbos. We are even taught that the clothes worn on Yom Tov should be more special than those worn on Shabbos. Furthermore, the Sages teach us that everyone should personally try to involve themselves in preparing for Yom Tov. This can be done by partaking in the activities needed such as cooking and cleaning or anything else required for Yom Tov. One fulfills the mitzvah of ‘oneg’ by eating special Yom Tov foods. (Ed. Of course, the halachos of ‘Kiddush’, ‘Lechem Mishneh’/two loaves and ‘Havdala’ apply on Yom Tov as on Shabbos, and they may be studied in their respective places within Hilchos Shabbos.) The Sages further derived that on Yom Tov, just as on Shabbos, one is required to change his speech and the way he conducts himself. For this reason, one may not discuss business matters or engage in conversation regarding anything that is forbidden to be done on Yom Tov

The Torah states ‘v’samachta b’chagecha’ (“You shall rejoice on your chagim/holidays!”) From this we learn a specific obligation pertaining to Yom Tov: That one must be happy on these days. Based on this, the Sages explain that it is a mitzvah for the head of each household to buy items that will bring enjoyment to each family member. Therefore, one should buy candy and special Yom Tov treats for the children and a new article of clothing or a piece of jewelry for the women. Men fulfill the obligation to rejoice by eating meat and drinking wine at each Yom Tov seuda (meal).

I know it’s late, but there is still some shopping time left… Baruch Hashem – together we have completed our study of Hilchos Yom Tov on this Hoshana Rabah 5774. May we continue learning throughout the year with His blessings!
