MBY 649:1-6 Things that invalidate the Four Species
MBY 649:1-6 Things that invalidate the Four Species (abridged) Our source for this lesson is partly from A Summary of Halachos of the Four Minim, by Rav Shimon Eider zt”l, pp. 1-2, partly from Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 137:8 (Metsudah edition, translated by Rabbi Avrohom Davis) and partly from the Mishnah Berura (all mushed together by yours truly! J)

Difference between the first day and the rest of Sukkos. Therefore, we will find differences in the halachos of the validity of the species between the first day of Sukkos, when the mitzvah is mid’Oraisa (from the Torah) and the other days, when it is mid’Rabanan. Some conditions are ‘pasul’ (invalid) for the entire Sukkos. Some are ‘pasul’ only for the first day, while on the other days, they are kosher! (Note: Any condition which is ‘pasul’ only for the first day of Yom Tov, should generally be treated as ‘pasul’ on the second day of Yom Tov outside of Eretz Yisrael as well. However, if a better set is not available, one may take the ‘pasul’ one on the second day, but without a bracha.)

A word of introduction before moving on… Whenever the Rabbis extended a Torah mitzvah beyond its Torah-bounds (e.g. here, where they extended the mitzvah of Arba Minim on the first day to the rest of Sukkos), it is important to determine which rules of the mitzvah they established for the Rabbinic extension. Sometimes they say ‘k’ein d’Oraisa tiknum’, i.e. we apply the rules with the same stringency as the Torah mitzvah itself, and sometimes they apply the rules more leniently. With the Arba Minim, they applied different rules differently! That is why these halachos are complex (Oy vey!) In this lesson, we will discuss two major principles which are more common. Hopefully, our lesson will provide a bit of knowledge with which to formulate questions for further clarification!
